The History and Evolution of Print Technology

As far as technologies go, the evolution of print is one of the most significant technological transformations in history. In fact, the origins of printing can be traced back all the way to the 6th century when early printing methods were developed. Over multiple centuries, there have been many milestones in the development of modern print technology, all of which have shaped our societies and instigated drastic changes around the world.

The Importance of Print Technology

The development of print technology has had a profound impact on society. Firstly, it enabled the fast spreading of knowledge, ideas and information. This sharing of knowledge sped up developments in the fields of science and technology, while also helping to spread political, cultural and artistic ideas through books, newspapers and other printed media.

Throughout history, the spread of new ideas stimulated the formation of multiple social movements, revolutions and paradigm shifts. Let’s take a look at a few of the most pivotal points in the evolution of print technology.

Printing in the Early Days

Ink Rubbing

Perhaps the earliest type of printing was ink rubbing, a technique originating in 6th century China. This technique involved rubbing ink on paper or cloth from text on stone tablets. Ink rubbings were used to replicate the inscriptions found on the stone tablets, which were usually used to commemorate significant events or figures.

Woodblock Printing

Soon after the invention of ink rubbing came a new technique called woodblock printing. This technique dates back to the 10th century in China. Woodblocking involved carving out texts onto blocks of wood, covering them in ink, and then pressing them onto papers on cloth.

Movable Type

During the Early Middle Ages, the movable type was also invented in China. This allowed for the creation of individual characters using porcelain pieces, which led to a drastic improvement in accuracy and efficiency in printing.

Print Technology during the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution

The Printing Press

The invention of mechanised printing was one of the most important developments in the history of print technology. Invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century, the Printing Press introduced the possibility of mass production for books and other printed documents.

Rotary Printing Press

The 19th century welcomed the rotary printing press, which enabled fast and more efficient printing to take place.

Steam-Powered Press

In the 19th century, the first steam-powered printing press was also invented. This enabled large-scale newspaper printing, which sped up the widespread dissemination of information.

Modern Print Technology

Linotype Machine

The Linotype machine, invented in 1884, was a breakthrough development in print technology. This allowed for the automatic typesetting by casting full lines of type at one go.

Offset Printing

In the 20th century, offset printing was introduced. This method, which is also known as lithography, uses plates to transfer ink to a rubber blanket before moving to paper.

Phototypesetting

Replacing the metal typesetting brought on by the Linotype machine, phototypesetting introduced a more precise a higher quality method to lay out pages on film.

Print Technology in the 21st Century

Digital Printing

Finally, digital printing as we know it was invented in the 20th century and has led to the widespread availability of on-demand printing. Modern print technology continues to improve, resulting in faster and sharper prints.

3-D Printing

Print technology continues to evolve, with the latest innovation being 3D Printing. This enables the production of physical objects, often based on complex designs, in a three dimensional format.

Whatever the future of printing looks like, we stay ahead of the curve to bring our clients the best quality prints, combined with flexibility and efficiency.
